The Beginning of Nature

Back to all Adapt

Friday 1 May

The Beginning of Nature explores the forces that nature asserts over humankind despite our continued efforts to see ourselves as separate from it and the notion that our bodies are inscribed with the same rhythms that underpin nature itself.

Composer Brendan Woithe, collaborated with Kaurna consultant, Jack Buckskin, to develop the original score fusing electronica with the strings of The Zephyr Quartet. With accompaniment by two vocalists, the spell-binding score includes a libretto sung in Kaurna language, the first language of the Adelaide Plains, where ADT is based.

The first development of The Beginning of Nature was presented at WOMADelaide in 2016. The final work premiered at Teatro Mayor Julia Mario Santo Domingo in Bogotá, Colombia, followed by extensive national and international touring, enjoying sold-out performances and critical acclaim.

Since 2017, The Beginning of Nature has been seen by over 37,000 people.

In 2019 The Beginning of Nature won the Helpmann Award for Best Dance Production.

This performance we are streaming was recorded in 2018 in at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
