Ben-Hur Winter

Ben-Hur (he/his) is a freelance producer and artsworker, published art director, fashion stylist (USA, Philippines, Australia) and former Cats international cast member. As Dance Research Associate, his inclusive approach to choreography, movement and dance invokes a classically influenced contemporary style that draws from Asian dance traditions together with intrinsic signifiers/forms of expression like Queer culture and voguing. Ben has been shaping a body of work through Anahata (heart centre), a practice-led, multi-disciplinary repertoire of didactic artistic collaborations engaged in dialogic cross-artform work, cultural exchange, creative activism and Community Cultural Development.

As an ADT ICC Artist in Residence in June 2019, he was able to rehearse in the Tanja Liedtke Studio with dancers Felicity Boyd, Tina Ebenreuter and media artist Peter Sansom for the third instalment of his boutique club night called Maison De Danse (House of Dance). Working under the lexicon #thestylecollaborative and through seasonal creative developments, this work looks at thematic ideas, influences and perceptions around community, identity and social justice while utilizing dance as a collaborative/investigatory medium shaped by technology and ethnomusicology.

Alongside expert local and globally accomplished musical selectors called DJ’s who perform an essential function as part of the collaborative process, Ben and the team have since been pro-active within the live music, theatre and arts festivals scene including; Adelaide Fringe, Feast Festival, Umbrella Winter City Sounds and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Most recently they were featured at Mildura Fringe for its first queer laneway festival called Summer Thrills Pride Edition, along with a stellar line-up of Australian electronic music artists, thanks to Arts Mildura and Creative Victoria.

#thestylecollaborative has received sponsorship from the Australian Cultural Fund, Dance Hub SA, Parkstone Foundation and the City of Adelaide and continually looks at sourcing ways and means of developing this project including prospective touring/club residency settings interstate and further afield.
