Motus Collective was founded in 2019 by co-founders Felicity Boyd and Zoe Gay. Both artists spent 2018 performing and touring Sweden and Europe as part of ilYoung Dance Company in 2018, dual recipients of the The Mill/ Helpmann Academy Il Dance Award. Whilst pursuing their own projects and goals individually, both artists realised upon returning to Australia in 2019 that South Australia needed new artistic energy in the contemporary dance scene. As a result of this need, Motus Collective was formed.
Motus Collective aims to provide access to space, to new ideas, ways of moving and thinking, and to connect the artistic communities that exist in South Australia, so often in isolation from each other. It aims to provide performance platforms for local musicians, artists, dancers and choreographers in a non-hierarchical environment that is financially accessible and has respect for artists as its core tenet.
In 2019 Motus Collective employed performers for Vitalstatistix’ Adhocracy season and for Australian Dance Theatre’s Rough Draft, undertaking residencies throughout 2019 at The Mill, Australian Dance Theatre and Dance Hub SA. Motus Collective ran weekly Interdisciplinary Jam Sessions open to all artists by donation at The Mill’s Breakout Space under their Expand program.
In 2020 Motus Collective have collaborated with Tom Borgas and Amber Cronin for Adelaide Festival’s InSpace program, and been commissioned by Fine Print Magazine to create work for the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Monster Theatres exhibition.
