SARAH-JAYNE HOWARD

ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Sarah-Jayne Howard has had an illustrious dance career spanning over 20 years in Australian Dance. She has worked with the country’s leading chorographers and companies and inspired a generation of dancers with her unique physicality.

Sarah-Jayne is a graduate of the New Zealand School of Dance. She has created and performed roles with choreographers and companies in both Australia and New Zealand, touring extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Canada and the US, including Meryl Tankard’s Australian Dance Theatre, Gideon Obarzanek (Chunky Move), Garry Stewart (Australian Dance Theatre), Kate Champion (Force Majeure), Gavin Webber (dancenorth), Douglas Wright, Michael Parmenter, Sean Curham, Raewyn Hill and The Farm.

Sarah-Jayne’s journey with Garry Stewart’s Australian Dance Theatre began with one of his earlier works, THWACK! She featured in Garry Stewart’s original ensemble, and was involved in the creation of his works, Birdbrain, Plastic Space and Housedance. She was also a guest dancer in Held, a collaboration featuring acclaimed photographer Lois Greenfield.

Sarah-Jayne was a member of splinter group (Gavin Webber, Grayson Millwood and Michelle Ryan), who created the dance theatre work roadkill, which toured internationally and nationally. Roadkill received four Greenroom Awards, including Best Dancer awarded to Sarah-Jayne. She is also the recipient of the New Zealand’s finest arts award, the Arts Laureate.

Sarah-Jayne has gone on to make her own work including roadkill, Breathe For Me, Stitch and & Salt, as well as assisting other choreographers in the development of work. She continues to inspire younger dancers, teaching and creating at universities and companies throughout Australia.

In 2018 Sarah-Jayne was appointed the Associate Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart.
